The Pietersburg show was started by 2 members of the Lions Club of Pietersburg, Lion Raymond Katzman and Lion Francios Badenhorst in 1968 as a service to the community of Pietersburg.

The venue was the old Town Hall and gardens in the centre of town. Very soon the Show outgrew the facility and the Lions convinced the Town Council to purchase the " Buks Botha Stadion" some 8 kms North of Pietersburg.

At that stage Lion President, Lion Arrie Ippel, a master builder, helped to erect Hall C. Hall A was completed by the Lions on a Rand-for-Rand basis with the help of the Town Council. Hall B was originally the 'Pits' for racing cars which the Lions completed.

Several years later the club's membership dwindled and the remaining members were not able to give up the kind or time that was required to run the Show and so the Club hired the show out to Lion Johan v.d. Westhuizen for R10 000 increasing by 10% p.a. which was donated to various charities.

Years later again, Lion Johan gave the show back to the Council.

The then Town Clerk, Mr Attie Vermaak called Mr Katzman (still a member of Lions)and requested him to take over the running of the Show, failing this, the Council would simply lock the gates.

Mr Katzman had a sworn valuation done and after discovering that an amount of R2 450 000.00 had been invested, he felt that since he was instrumental in starting the Show, he did not wish the Show to terminate and so he and his then secretary Ms du Preez left and Ms Wilma Sterley was appointed as secretary.

Years later she left and Ms Rina Venter filled her position. The post was eventually taken over by Ms Corrie Venter.

Originally the facility was given free of charge! However, since the new dispensation, we are currently charged a rental of approximately R90 000.00. Furthermore the present Council does very little towards the upkeep and maintenance of the buildings.

The Show committee has to clean the grounds and toilets during Showtime. The Council gives no assistance in providing any temporary electrical connections and the Show Committee has to employ an electrician for the duration of the Show at an exorbitant fee.

Nevertheless, with great determination and the kind help of several major sponsors, the Show has steadily grown and our 2007 Show was our biggest success ever, resulting in the Committee being in a position to donate R10 00.00 to The Child welfare Society, R10 000.00 to Our Home for Senior Citizens and R10 000.00 to the SPCA.

The Committee also donated one month's supply of foodstuffs to a home caring for indigent senior citizens. The Pietersburg / Polokwane Show recently changed it's name to The Polokwane Show and Music Festival. We are proud to claim that we have grown to become the largest Show of it's kind in the Limpopo Province attracting over 31 000 spectators.
